Our first weekend adventure of the year was to the Overberg, specifically Elgin and a quick pop in at Caledon. I struggle buying presents for Dean and even more so that his birthday and Christmas lie so close to each other so this year I decided to do something different... I planned a whole surprise weekend away and Dean loved the idea.
I only came up with this idea the week before Dean's birthday so I struggled a bit trying to find accommodation and I also couldn't make up my mind of where to go. Eventually I settled on Elgin as we had never been before and it always looks so pretty driving past on the N2. The bonus is that it's really close to Cape Town but still feels like you're far from the city. I had my first airbnb experience where I found our accommodation, but more on that later.
So on the Saturday we started our trip and Dean of course had no clue where we were going or what I had planned. Our first stop of the day was at Peregrines farm stall for some snacks- a must if you're going passed on the N2.
From there we headed to Caledon for some quad biking! Dean was really surprised and super keen. The quad biking is at the Caledon Hotel and Casino. It's about R400 per person for an hour but I used my Entertainer app so we got the 2 for 1 deal.
I had never been quad biking and I must say I did start to get a bit nervous when we had our demonstration on the workings of the bike. The nerves weren't helped when the guide asked us to do a demo ride around the track to get used to the bike. I accidentally fully accelerated instead of taking off the break. I got a huge fright nearly flying off the back and nearly gave the guide a heart attack- ha. He made me do a few more practice loops before I eventually go the hang of it and we set off.
We went off with the guide around the hotel grounds and into the farmlands. I got the grip of it and it was really fun! Definitely think I need to use the rest of my quad biking Entertainer vouchers before the year is up.
Quad biking worked up our appetite and so out next stop was lunch back near Elgin at South Hill Wine Estate. Again Dean was really surprised and even more so because the food was so so good. The restaurant serves delicious tapas style food and even had Dean complimenting the chef (something unusual as he's as far from being a foodie as one can be).
Fully satisfied it was time for the last surprise of the day, to show Dean where we would be staying.
We stayed in a tiny container styled house on an apple farm. It was so cool and even though it was tiny it was perfect. I had found it on AirBnb and had a good experience with the owner, we literally just arrived and went inside with no fuss or anything.
The views from the balcony were so pretty and we just spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing and enjoying the visits from the farm puppy and cat.
The next morning (Dean's birthday) we were up early and off on a morning run around the orchards to see the views of the valleys. The day was gloomy but the valleys still looked so beautiful and bright and green. All too soon it was time to head back to reality.
It was a perfect weekend and my planning worked out well, if I do say so myself. Now to keep up the momentum and go on lots more weekends away.
